Transforming Water Infrastructure Through Smart Irrigation

The Mohanpura–Kundalia Irrigation Project is building one of the world's largest pressurized irrigation networks, delivering efficient, technology-driven water distribution across Madhya Pradesh.

  • 80%+ vs 38% MK targets max efficiency vs 38% national average
  • 1,200 MCM Storage Capacity across Mohanpura & Kundalia Dams
  • 25,000 km Pipeline Network serving 1,300 Villages
  • 2025: CBIP Best Implementation
  • 2025–26: 2.9 Lakh+ Ha Irrigation Coverage

// About the project

From Drought-Prone District to India's Most Advanced Irrigation Model

Before 2014, Rajgarh Madhya Pradesh's wester nmost district was on the verge of desertification. Only 8% of its area was irrigated. Farmers were forced into seasonal migration. Today, the Mohanpura-Kundalia Irrigation Project has transformed the region using pressurised pipe network connecting reservoirs, pumping systems, and agricultural command areas of two districts of Madhya Pradesh.

Project Milestones

From an aspirational district to a global benchmark the journey of Mohanpura–Kundalia.

From the initial feasibility report to the landmark journey of the MKPMU project.

  1. PRE-2010

    Aspirational District Status

    Prior to 2010, Rajgarh was among the least irrigated districts of Madhya Pradesh and was recognized as an aspirational district, facing limited irrigation coverage and agricultural challenges.

  2. 2013–2014

    Project Preparation & Construction

    Project planning and detailed design were completed in 2013. Construction of the Mohanpura and Kundalia dams, along with rehabilitation works, commenced in 2014.

  3. 2018

    Dams Commissioned in Record Time

    Both Mohanpura and Kundalia dams were successfully completed and commissioned in 2018, creating a combined storage capacity of over 1,200 MCM.

  4. 2018–2019

    Pressurised Irrigation Network Innovation

    The Mohanpura–Kundalia Project Management Unit introduced a pressurised irrigation network, replacing conventional canal-based delivery. The project also commissioned the region's first Pressurised Irrigation Network (PIN) integrated with SCADA at Mohanpura Right Bank.

  5. 2022–2025

    National & Global Recognition

    The project received multiple prestigious recognitions, including CBIP Award 2022 – Optimum Utilisation of Water Resources, National Water Award 2022, and CBIP Award 2025 – Best Implementation.

  6. 2025–2026

    Project Scale & Coverage

    As of 2025–26, the project irrigates a cultivable command area of over 290,000 hectares through an extensive 25,000 km pipeline network, benefiting approximately 1,300 villages and supported by 20+ pumping stations.

// Strategic Impact

Enhanced Irrigation Access

Satellite-based NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and GIS mapping validate the significant increase in green cover and vegetation density post implementation, indicating robust on-ground performance. This widespread access has turned previously rain-fed or uncultivated land into productive zones.

2017 (>0.35 NDVI = 139734 Ha)

2025 (>0.35 NDVI = 277817 Ha)

// Strategic Impact 1.2

Surge in Crop Production

The year-wise procurement trend highlights a significant rise in agricultural output across the command area. Procurement volumes remained steady in the initial years before witnessing a sharp increase, reaching over 21 lakh metric tonnes in 2024–25. This growth reflects the positive impact of enhanced irrigation coverage and improved farming practices.

Line chart of yearwise total agricultural procurement in tonnes, rising from about 0.55 million tonnes in 2018-19 to over 2.1 million tonnes in 2024-25

// 100 Days 100 Villages

100 Villages. 100 Days. Thousands of Stories.

Over 100 days, the Mohanpura–Kundalia Project team visited 100 villages across the command area listening to farmers, witnessing transformation on the ground, and documenting real impact.
